 Antalya is an ancient city located under the belly of the Turkish Peninsula, the city of Antalya is a very popular tourist destination thanks to its location on the Turkish Riviera which is a coastal area located in Southern Turkey.

 This city also has a very rich history due to the metropolis being controlled by a large number of different nations and empires as well as being the location of many majors battles from before the medieval ages to the First World War.

 Apart from being a very beautiful place, there is much more than this city has to offer which is what we are going to be discussing on this interesting trip to the resort city of Antalya, Turkey.

     The Population of Antalya.

 Antalya is ranked eighth in Turkey in terms of population and is one of the biggest cities in the south of Turkey. The first settlers of what is now the city of Antalya were Greek settlers who were founding Greek colonies all over the Mediterranean and the Black Sea.

 A few hundred years after the founding of Antalya it was taken over by the Roman Empire which saw the city become a major trading hub in the eastern Mediterranean. A few hundred years later it was taken over by various Muslim Sultanates that we will discuss in more detail below in the history section, the city continues to attract people thanks to its favorable climate.

 This city is of great importance because throughout history, whoever controlled the city of Antalya was able to control Anatolia which is the main landmass that Turkey is located on.

     Notable People from Antalya.

 A major celebrity who is born in Antalya is Senay Akay who is a female model born in 1980 who is the niece of a very famous female singer and actress in Turkey that is called Muserref Akay. Senay Akay grew up in Antalya, she quickly rose to prominence at the age of 14 when she won the Best Model of the World competition which show her to worldwide fame and made her a well-known celebrity in Turkey.

 Another famous native of Antalya is politician Deniz Baykal who is a leading figure in the CHP political party that is the party that was created by the founder of the modern state of Turkey, Kemal Ataturk. Baykal has served as a Deputy Prime Minister and also as the Foreign Minister, he is a very experienced politician that has been active since the 1950s while he was a student at university.

 Furthermore, there is actor Kaan Tasaner who is best known for his leading roles in popular Turkish television dramas.

     History of Antalya.

 This city was founded by Attalus the Second of the Greek Pergamum as a settlement that will help fortify the Eastern half of his Kingdom and make the local populace easier to control. The city of Antalya was founded in 150 B.C. and just 17 years later it was taken over by the fast-expanding Roman Empire that was sweeping through Asia Minor towards the Middle East.

 Following the spread of Christianity throughout the Roman Empire, Antalya becomes a majority Christian city in the first century A.D. and remained a Christian city until the 13th century when it was finally conquered by the Turks, having been one of the last cities left for them to take following the fall of Constantinople that was then renamed to Istanbul.

 Following the annexation by the Seljuk Turks, the city quickly became a Muslim minority city, but more importantly the harbor was expanded which made Antalya stand out from the other cities in the area. After the First World War ended, the Italians occupied this city until 1925.

     Culture of the City of Antalya.

 You can have an interesting trip to the resort city of Antalya, Turkey by learning and taking a look at the local culture that has developed in the city as well as the areas surrounding it.

 Thanks to its prime seaside location, Antalya is a very popular host city for festivals such as the International Antalya Film Festival which is held every year during the months of September and October; this film festival is the second biggest in all of Turkey.

 It focuses mainly on Turkish films and television shows, although there is also an international film category that celebrates foreign films that are popular in Turkey.

 Other key cultural events are the Aspendos International Opera and Ballet Festival which is one of the most unique dance festivals due to its being hosted in the Aspendos Theatre which is a theatre that was built by the Romans and is over two thousand years old.

 There is also the famous Sandland event which attracts thousands of people from all over the world to have a go at making various sea sculptures.

     The Climate of Antalya.

 Antalya has an average yearly temperature of 18.7 degrees Celsius, with the average temperatures never dropping below 10 degrees Celsius in any of the months of the year.

 The hottest months in a normal year are between June and August where the average temperature is over 25 degrees Celsius and can reach as high as 35 degrees Celsius.

 The summer weather in the city and its surrounding territories is nice and dry with between 0.5 and 1.6 rainy days on average between June and August, however the number of rainy days dramatically increase in the rest of the year with the months of December, January and February having over 10 rainy days in a month. Overall, in the average year in Antalya, you will see 73.9 days when it will rain.

     Popular Food from Antalya.

 Food is a very important part of the local way of life in the city, with many unique local dishes as well as local variations of other popular Turkish and international foods.

 One of those must-try foods is a dish known as Piyaz which is a salad that is also often eaten as a starter or a side dish while drinking alcohol.

 Piyaz is made using beans, chopped onions, sesame oil, and the addition of a locally found flower called sumac.

 Unsurprisingly, due to Antalya being a seaside city located on the rich waters of the Mediterranean Sea, some popular types of fish include Cod, Sea Bass, Salmon, Tuna and Sea bream are all fish that are native to the Mediterranean waters. These fish can be cooked in a variety of ways such as in an oven, smoked, or grilled and are then served with cooked or uncooked vegetables and also fresh salads.

     Famous Buildings to Explore in Antalya.

 An interesting trip to the city of Antalya, Turkey is pretty much-guaranteed thanks to the array of historical and modern buildings that are well-known all around Turkey and the world. One of those is the Hadrian Gate, which historians and archaeologists believe was built in the 130s A.D. in order to honor the current ruler of the Roman Empire, Emperor Hadrian.

 A very interesting story is associated with this building, everyone forgot about it, and it was left alone for hundreds of years with the locals believing that it was some average old building, but it wasn’t until the year 1817 that it was discovered by British ocean mapper Sir Francis Beaufort who ended up discovering that this was a perfectly preserved structure built by the famous Roman Empire.

 Another famous building Antalya that you simply cannot miss is the Yivli Minare Mosque which was built in the 13th century by the Seljuk Turks, it is well known for its tall Minaret that is 38 meters tall and was a technological and architectural feat for the time it was built and without a doubt, it was one of the tallest structures in the city for hundreds of years.

 There is also the Antalya Aquarium which offers a great choice for families and people looking for a more interactive experience, it is one of the most modern and Biggest Aquariums in Turkey with over 1 million visitors every year. The main attraction of Antalya Aquarium is a 131-meter underwater tunnel that allows you to fully immerse yourself in the underwater world inside this humongous.
